This trade feels more like a financial maneuver than a basketball strategy. By trading away Middleton's $31.7 million contract for Kuzma’s $23.5 million (plus part of his 15% trade kicker), the Bucks have reduced their luxury tax bill by nearly $30 million this season and avoided going over the second luxury tax threshold.

The calculation surrounding this second threshold could benefit them as they aim to compete in the playoffs, according to ESPN reporter Bobby Marks, who noted that it requires Kuzma to waive some of his trade bonus, allowing Milwaukee just under that limit.

If the Bucks do not take back more salary than they send out in trades moving forward, they'll be free to package contracts together and still have time left for another deal aimed at addressing Middleton’s playmaking absence.

This move signals an acknowledgment from Milwaukee that winning a championship may no longer be feasible with their current roster configuration unless drastic changes occur or if Middleton returns fully healthy after recovering from injuries.
